I'm a serving corps member, who studied computer engineering in one of the Polytechnics in Nigeria.
When I was younger, I used to think the reason Nigerians working on road construction or electrical installations were mostly supervised by white men was because they are not knowledgeable in the field. I couldn't have been further from the truth!
It was not till much later I found out that some of those workers are quite(and in some cases more) knowledgeable with the practical hands-on knowledge to boot but the government has no trust or belief in our abilities. They completely discard what we learnt from the institutions they prepared for us in the country.
I started thinking about this trend recently due to an incident I witnessed on my way to my CDS meeting. I boarded a bike and we passed via a road along an estate, what I saw got me disturbed and thinking, though it's not a big deal as it is a common occurrence but I was moved by the incident that day.
I saw two white men standing, one was busy on a phone call and the other staring straight ahead. I was curious so I followed his gaze to see what made him so focused. Two of my beloved country men were holding shovels, working with worn out clothes, looking so unkempt and dirty. I was pained and thought to myself "it's their country they are being treated like this?"
My questions are:
Does it mean our educational system can't teach us what we need to build our country ourselves without western interference?
Does it mean we're still slaves even after slavery?
Does our government know what it's doing atall?
Does it mean there are no bright men and women that can set our affairs aright?
Or we are just going to follow this already failed pattern laid before us?
Is going to school in Nigeria is a waste?
What can we do to eliminate or reduce drastically this routine of giving foreigners jobs that we are complaining that we don't have?
So many questions...
I believe the answer starts with you and I.
Yes, you reading this.
It may not seem like it now but if you become the president tomorrow can your current habits sustain you?
If you get a million dollar contract now will integrity suppress greed?
You were once class rep. did you omit your friends name from defaulters even when he was guilty?
My point is, if you're in the position of our leaders will you be different?
You can start the change
